Treat teachers like professionals. Could you imagine doctors doing ice breakers at their conferences? Could you imagine lawyers doing centers? Data shows that adults do not learn the same way as children.

Work is work. Idk why this is such a hard concept. I love parts of my JOB. It is rewarding. But it’s still a job and I’d rather be at home in my garden or on my motorcycle. Or with my own kids! The beginning of the year is jarring for a lot of us. And PD is excessive and sometimes boring. That doesn’t mean I don’t take pride in what I do. My classroom is going to be bomb. But I’m not working off the clock.

Looove prepping my classroom. Hate PDs. Does any teacher that’s in the classroom actually like them?

I’m sorry, but just because we teach children, doesn’t mean we want to be treated like them. I’ve had good PDs, where they got that and made it adult-friendly and fun. I’ve also had PDs in which we were treated like the students, rather than professionals. Which one do you think got better feedback? 😆

My issue was that I usually had only 3 contract days before school started, and of that, only 2-3 hours were for my individual prep time. Every other minute was a meeting or PD

If any PD starts with an ice breaker, I am checked out for the whole thing. If I am read to, I’m not going to pay attention. If it’s skill based, and we are actually practicing the skill, I’m okay with it as long as it’s not something I could do on my own. Teachers are educated people many with multiple degrees. Presumably, we know how to learn. If I am treated like a 3rd grader who hasn’t learned how to study, I will have zero interest in the PD, and I will evaluate it as a waste of time. If I can pick it up on my own in 15 minutes, or it could have been an email or a PDF, it does not need to be a PD. Also, don’t make everyone attend these things just because one or two people need it.

could it be that the teacher that didn't want to go back to school early realized they are not getting paid?

I'm a music teacher. The amount of reading and math data I've had to analyze and discuss strategies about is enough to drive me insane. Anyway, day 1 at my current school is a work day. It's fantastic.

Not all of us can get into our classrooms before Pads start…some of us don’t even know what room we’ll be in until the first day back (if we’re lucky)

21 DAYS?! I get 4 days plus the tiny amount of time we get during PD days.

Great take, I agree!! Making PD engaging isn’t the issue for me. It is making it applicable without wasting our time (which could be spent in our classroom preparing for the first day)

you missed the teacher who just found out that she will be teaching 2 days before PD and has no idea what the students need.

Also, some teachers are not in a financial place to afford 21 days to set up unpaid. If we are not contracted we should not be expected to go in. I don’t get when people try to make it seem like these systemic issues like this are the faults of single individuals. We ALL lose because of these expectations.

Just because she is a teacher doesn't mean that validates her judgement and criticism of other in the education--- teaching is one of the ONLY jobs that will guilt and shame you into following the status quo 💖thank you for being real

I’m still in summer school! Lol!! I just took the numbers for lining up off my floor this afternoon. I did get the BTS online training today, so I will do those during my prep time for summer school so I get paid for them.

Why are the only two options dumb ice breakers & boring slides? We are expected to be dynamic.

I think PD should be differentiated, maybe offer a skill assessment to see if a teacher has already mastered the objective of the training

I’ve been both of the teachers this principal is talking about and it depended upon my teaching assignment, the year, and the time in my life. But regardless of the days I spend sitting and listening to a principal talk at me, I have nothing but sunshine and rainbows with the students when they walk in the door. It is all about the students. It saddens me this principal is making it all about her.

So, I don’t mind sitting in PD, but only when it applies to what I am doing.. a really good principal if they were really thoughtful and considerate of your time, would do PD in the mornings and then give us the afternoons to set up and organize our classrooms.
