Pick your partner wisely she’s referring to a very specific type of life style as a stay at home mom of three since 18 I’ve invested in nothing but everything is paid off and in my name nothing this conversation is a more nuanced conversation then either side is willing to admit moral of the story pick the right partner make the right decision

that doesn't really make sense, because the alternative is you working for somebody that would replace you in a week then you'd be sacrificing your autonomy for them

My husband makes 1.5x my income, and is pursuing even higher income. I will NEVER give up my full time job, no matter how much he makes.

The alternative is also sacrificing your autonomy, for 40+ hours a week every week of your life. He is sacrificing HIS autonomy so that you can have more.

That just depends on the man you marry. When you are on the bank accounts, savings, life insurance, investments then it’s different. You should NEVER have to ask for buying stuff. Have your car in your name and be on the deed as well. If any man argues that then they are not the one. A real man/husband shows you how to handle the finances just incase anything were to happen.

This mindset on a large scale is libertarianism in a nutshell. If your power can be taken away you dont have any power at all

I dont work much or at all because of my health. my husband is wonderful, if we can afford something he never says no. he has never used money to control me. but even with the PERFECT partner, it fucking sucks. I wish more women realized what theyre giving up

Being a house spouse (either gender) is a risk. That doesn't mean it's the wrong decision. Especially if you choose the right person

I got married at 18 now 20. Prenup are important, money in your own names important, separate bank accounts are important, join bank accounts important and being able to recognize financial abuse is important.

It’s not just that! If you don’t know how to balance your books think about if your partner passes. I’ve seen it in the older generations. Elderly women will have their husband pass and now they don’t know how to balance their books, how much things really cost and how to budget. These women are in their 70-80s. It’s hard to learn how to do that when you’re at the end of life. Even if you have the perfect partner you may end up doing life alone at some point & it’s essential to understand how to handle business.

Idk maybe this is just me but if you marry a man that actually loves you and wants you to be happy then this won’t happen. My husband takes my every word into account when we decide what we want to do, want to live, want to see. Do I think every person should be an adult with adult responsibilities before getting married? Yes because your future partner deserves someone who is capable of doing things!

ppl disagreeing w you but you’re so right tho. while my husband pays the big bills, i still have a job and pay for everything else— groceries, vet appointments, pet food, and i do all the vehicle maintenance and pay for most of the parts. while he “pays more” we’re pretty evenly split on the percentage of our check that goes to the things we pay for. i also cover my own insurance and personal bills. we do share a phone plan to save money tho lol i don’t want to not work bc i want my OWN money. my mom stopped working when my youngest sibling was born and hasn’t worked since. my dad said she can go back to work if she wants to but she’d rather stay home and take care of the farm and garden while he works out of state. it works for them but would NOT work for me and my husband lol. my mom gets literally everything she wants and doesn’t ask for anything (she lowk wears the pants even tho my dad makes the money lol) but i completely understand what you’re saying bc you kinda do lose your autonomy if you have to ask for everything! congrats on the apartment btw!!

A lot of women have learned how to find comfort in the patriarchy by doing these things. They're still victims of patriatchy, but its just super interesting to hear that they think making these "choices" to uphold patriarchal ideals is somehow feminist.
