During our recent river cleanup in Sidoarjo, East Java, we collected 5 tons of waste in 4 days, 3 tons of which were diapers! Unfortunately, it is very common for diapers to be thrown in rivers in Indonesia because of the local ‘suleten’ myth (if diapers are burnt or thrown in landfills, it will make the baby sick). Therefore, most diapers today are thrown directly into our rivers – out of sight, out of mind. Diapers are made of plastic, pulp, and synthetic fabrics, materials that have a large carbon footprint and that take hundreds of years to biodegrade. When they end up in rivers, they don’t just harm our environment but they can also lead to many health issues. We are now actively trying to find ways to educate and empower mothers in the area with the knowledge of how to properly dispose of their diapers.
