this is very simplified, also a little help from the french, France bankrupted themselves fighting England to help the US get freedom, the Spanish and Dutch was also fighting the Brits at the same time, and while they lost the colonies in America, Britain ultimately came out on top, beat the french, Spanish and Dutch and went on to rule the seas for over a hundred years, we only lost naval dominance after ww2 because we went bankrupt fighting the Nazis
