My thought (as a mental health professional), and people are free to disagree, is that in Grade 9 there should be a course on basic mental health and coping. An understanding of anxiety, stress, low mood and motivation, and how healthy coping skills/strategies and good self care can benefit.

I agree we had mandatory Home economics and shop classes when I went to high school.

That’s why I’m so happy. My grandkids have never gone to school. They’re being homeschooled. They’re learning how to cook light fires all the math and everything and they’re way ahead of where classes are with only 3-4 hrs per day

Home ec and auto shop taught me most of that. Part of my 6th grade was budgeting, income, paying bills (by writing checks) and how the stock market worked. The scouts taught me the fire part

My school actually had a driver’s Ed course where the teacher taught us also how to change a tire and check our oil. We had two different types of home ec and shop class. It’s a tragedy what has happened to public education in the last 20 years

It was called home economics, and shop class. People who make laws about education decided we didn’t need to know how to take care of ourselves.

I had to take a half credit course like that in high school called personal life management. It was about finances, taxes, credit, interest etc.
