It's mandatory to go expert and above. Classic vs expert isn't that big a gap in difficulty and you get more items, treasure bags and an extra accessory slot.

To be honest, Terraria is too difficult, so I recommend you play on classic mode first to figure out the mechanics and how to play; it's like a tutorial. After that, you can move on to other difficulties. (dont listen to people that say u cant play the way u want, u paid👀)
