There are two separate reports involving ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه and Qur’anic recitation, and they sometimes get blended together online: 1. Surah al-Ḥāqqah (69) — a report attributed directly to ʿUmar رضي الله عنه about hearing the Prophet ﷺ recite it. 2. Surah Ṭā-Hā (20) — the famous story of ʿUmar رضي الله عنه going to his sister Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها and hearing the Qur’an before accepting Islam. The important point is that the details of these reports have different levels of authenticity. 1. ʿUmar رضي الله عنه hears Surah al-Ḥāqqah Before accepting Islam, ʿUmar رضي الله عنه was strongly opposed to the Prophet ﷺ. In a narration attributed to ʿUmar رضي الله عنه, he said that he went out intending to confront the Prophet ﷺ. He found that the Prophet ﷺ had already entered the Masjid al-Ḥarām. ʿUmar رضي الله عنه stood behind him while he ﷺ began reciting Surah al-Ḥāqqah. As ʿUmar رضي الله عنه listened, he was struck by the extraordinary composition and eloquence of the Qur’an. He thought to himself that perhaps Muhammad ﷺ was a poet, as Quraysh claimed. Then the Prophet ﷺ recited: “And it is not the word of a poet; little do you believe. Nor the word of a soothsayer; little do you remember. [It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.” — Qur’an 69:41–43 ʿUmar رضي الله عنه said that when he thought “a soothsayer”, the Prophet ﷺ continued with the next verses, which directly addressed that claim. Then came verses 44–47, stating that if the Messenger ﷺ had fabricated words against Allah, Allah would have seized him and no one could have prevented it. ʿUmar رضي الله عنه then said that Islam entered his heart deeply. This report is recorded in Musnad Aḥmad, but there is an important qualification: the chain is interrupted (munqaṭiʿ), and it is graded weak on that basis. So it is better to say: “A report attributed to ʿUmar رضي الله عنه says…” rather than presenting every detail as unquestionably authentic.
