Exciting! We’re sowing our first seeds of the growing along! This week we’re sowing our chilli seeds. Chillies need a long growing season to provide a decent harvest as they are quite slow growing; but they also need a lot of heat, with ideal temperatures between 15 and 29 degrees. Because of this it’s best to start chillies off in the house somewhere warm: a sunny windowsill or heated propagator both work well. Keep your chillies in the house until temperatures are consistently staying above 12-15 degrees outside or in your greenhouse (wherever you’re moving them to outdoors). You can also keep chillies in the house permanently - we’ll cover how to pollinate them if they are indoors later this year. To sow your chilli seeds, fill a seed tray with compost, make a hole about half a centimetre deep (and no deeper) and pop a seed in. Cover it over, give it a water and pop it on your windowsill or propagator. They should germinate within a couple weeks. I’d advise sowing a few extra seeds as insurance in case some of them don’t germinate or the plants die later down the line. I’ll show you how to pot these on a few weeks time 🌶️🌱🤗 I have recommended 3 chilli plants for the grow along because if you’re growing the kind of chillies that you use in cooking (similar to a Birds Eye for example), 3 plants should give you a years’ supply (they freeze really well). We’re growing these in pots for the grow along though so if you would like more plants go for it! 🔥 Varieties I am sowing: basket of fire (small red hot chilli great for cooking), jalapeño, padron and pumpkin. #growalong #chillies #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets
