The Bible only justifies divorce for 2 reasons. And before you comment, no, “we grew apart” isn’t one of them. Not boredom. Not “the spark died.” Not falling out of love, incompatibility, “we’re different people now,” or finding someone who “gets you.” Scripture never opens the door for leaving because marriage got hard or feelings got quiet. Covenant was never built on a mood. But here’s what the church won’t preach, and what someone reading this needs to hear tonight. The Bible DOES open the door. Twice. 1️⃣ Matthew 19:9. “I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.” Jesus Himself permitted divorce when the covenant is physically and morally BROKEN. Sexual immorality shatters the one-flesh covenant. And hear me, a covenant can be broken by more than an affair. Abuse Abuse breaks it too. A man tearing his wife down daily has already left the covenant. She’s just the only one still honoring it. 2️⃣ 1 Corinthians 7:15. “But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. The brother or the sister is not bound in such circumstances. God has called us to live in peace.” Abandonment by an unbelieving spouse. And abandonment isn’t only a packed suitcase. A spouse can abandon the marriage while still sleeping in the bed. Emotional abandonment. Financial abuse. Cruelty. That’s an unbeliever’s WALK, whatever their mouth claims on Sunday. You are NOT bound. Read the last line again: God has called us to live in PEACE. So if you’ve been white-knuckling a destructive marriage because someone weaponized “God hates divorce” at you, hear this. God hates what breaks covenant. He never commanded you to die inside one that someone else already shattered. Staying isn’t your holiness. And leaving what’s destroying you isn’t your rebellion.
