Born in Hammond, Indiana, on May 19, 1931, into a family of preachers, he studied at Central Bible College and was ordained with the Assemblies of God in 1952. He then pastored small churches in Pennsylvania. In 1958 a Life magazine story about seven New York teenagers on trial for murder pierced him deeply. Out of that unlikely beginning came Teen Challenge. Wilkerson’s ministry grew, but his message grew sterner rather than softer. Yet the larger the work became, the more he warned against mistaking ministry for intimacy with Christ. A man may labor for God and still neglect God Himself. “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” Proverbs 4:23. Wilkerson died in a car crash in Texas on April 27, 2011, aged seventy-nine. The works did not go into the grave with him. Times Square Church still stands in Manhattan. World Challenge continues its global ministry. Summit continues training workers, and Teen Challenge has grown into a worldwide network serving people bound by addiction.
