Eventually, most get to a place where it's not about being happy alone; it's about being happy knowing you are in full control of your own smiles and tears. There are no compromises, no debates, no anxiety, no arguments; it's just total bliss and freedom. Obviously, you will miss some aspects of a relationship, but for some reason (especially with age and wisdom), the brain actually starts to weigh up properly the advantages and disadvantages of being in a relationship. And at the end of that process, you just choose bliss, freedom, and control.
