Sometimes life just goes wrong. You will choose the wrong job, move to the wrong city, and you'll give your love to the wrong person. You'll take a wrong turn onto a wrong path, and it'll end up leaving you hurt and unhappy. This is just an unavoidable part of being a human being. But then some people will add to their hurt. They will stack on top of this shame, regret, or guilt. This is known as the two arrows parable in Buddhist philosophy. The idea is to remember that life will fire arrows at us. There will be suffering, sickness, and a thousand foolish decisions that seem sensible at the time, and no one can avoid this arrow. But then there is the second arrow, which is the reaction to the first. It's when we lie awake at three in the morning replaying the conversation. It's when we decide that one failed relationship means we're unlovable, or that one wrong job means that we are a fraud. The first wound is the wound we must bear, but the second is the one we self-inflict over and over again. The parable asks us to remember that life sometimes will be rubbish. There will be suffering ahead. But in a world so full of hardship, let's not invent more. Do not dwell. Do not linger. Do not pick at the scabs. We must suffer 'the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Or take arms against a sea of troubles.' But that doesn't mean we need to go about inventing any more along the way.
