Imagine you're in a meeting with the boss, and they suggest a terrible idea, and they ask everybody what they think, and nobody says a thing. Everybody just nods along and waits for the end. Then later in your group chat, you and your friends say it's a terrible idea. How could they even be thinking about this? This is what the economist Timur Kuran called ‘preference falsification.’ And it's what happens when the cost of saying what you really think feels too high. You say what's expected of you instead. We do this constantly in small ways, and it's mostly harmless. I'm sure most people have laughed at a joke they didn't find funny, or they've clapped along to a speech they didn't actually like. But the problem comes when everybody is doing this about the big and important things as well, because now nobody knows what everybody else actually thinks, including those in charge. A whole society can look calm and contented while being privately furious, because that fury is never voiced aloud. And this is how revolution seemed to come from nowhere, right up until the wall falls. The regime looks stable, the streets are quiet, and the polls will tell you nothing. Kuran's point is that we shouldn't mistake silence for agreement, because sometimes a silence is a performance. When one person speaks up, and they can survive, and it invites other people to speak up as well, and one voice will become a crowd, a crowd will become a movement, and a movement can change a great deal.
