Who remembers when the JCDC Gospel Festival Competition was truly something special? It was built on originality, genuine talent, and creativity. Then there were the exciting roadshows that travelled across the country, bringing communities together, boosting local businesses, and, most importantly, leading many souls to Christ.
Back then, the winner was determined by the judges' score sheets, based on the quality of the performance. Today, the outcome is largely decided by public voting. That means people are exercising significant influence over who wins, and competitors with a larger support base may have a greater advantage, regardless of the performance itself.
I have nothing against the modern era, but it just isn't my style. To me, Jamaica has lost some of the unique flavour and authenticity that once made gospel music so special. Those were the days when the ministry came first, and the competition simply showcased the gifts God had given. To me, allowing the outcome to depend primarily on voting moves the focus away from the original spirit of the competition, and I don't believe that reflects what gospel ministry should be about.
