@asian_soph: I call this meeting of the Asian Dad Club to order! Okay, but in all seriousness, being mixed Asian with an Asian dad has so many layers, stereotypes, and false narratives that come with it. It is on us to grow this conversation at this point and address some of the gaps in the overall mixed experience. It’s all about creating what we needed that we didn’t have - the blueprints, resources, discourse, etc. Same with the wasian convo. Although I don’t identify that way, I think it’s important we still unpack our identities no matter how early on in that stage you might be. And that’s not only specific to mixed Asian and whyte folks AT ALL. We’re all in different stages and phases as a community. BUT, part of being in community and contributing to its growth is having the difficult conversations and facing the hard truths. I fear that the backlash pushed many folks to just stop and not explore it anymore. And while I get the response, it should be a sign to evolve and understand the nuance. Because there is privilege here to understand and unpack. There is also trauma and fear too. There’s room for all of it. But the room never gets used if you never unpack those boxes and proceed forward even if you’re feeling uncomfortable. I also want to add that the backlash was warranted because there was a lot of leaning into privilege and excluding the broader mixed Asian community as a whole. And those of us with privilege need to use it to raise us all up. It’s not saying we don’t deserve space, it’s acknowledging that all the space is basically being given to us when it comes to systems and visibility. Even though it might not always feel that way in our everyday lives, it’s the truth when you look at everything in context and not just your individual experience in a vacuum. All this to say, it’s not an invitation to berate people or make them feel bad or whatever - it’s a space to call in and evolve together. But that also means respecting that this video is address mixed Asians with an Asian dad and mixed Asian and whiite folks. So let’s keep that in mind. Anyways, let me know more about your experiences and what assumptions people have made about you. #mixed

Mixed Asian! I was always told I'm just white by everyone around me. Paternal side for me as well. I was raised in a 2nd-3rd generation immigrant household. I wasn't taught much of anything (I begged to learn our language but was denied). All I truly have is a connection to the food 😭 I'm proud to be part Indonesian, but I'm sad I don't know much of anything because I wasn't taught. It's always felt like I'm missing an entire part of myself (idk how else to explain it). I'll never understand why the conversation around being mixed has to be so confusing. We're mixed, that's it 🥲

My family is exactly the same as yours. I am the white midwestern Irish/ German mom & my kids dad (divorced) is from Osaka Japan. My beautiful daughters very much identify with their Asian side. They grapple with so much of what you have outlined. . I think they would love to chat with you

I'm the Asian mom (husband is white Porto Rican). I joke around I'm just Japanese on the looks and last name because I was raised in Brazil. My wasian kids are still confused about their heritage. 😅

My mom still did a lot of cultural stuff for us when she could. He rarely did but expected us (including mom) to be “representing the family” at everything. To the point that the family dont always expect him at things anymore. He never taught us the language. But not to say she was 100% great. She can have problems when I “don’t claim my white side”. Even though there isn’t really anything specific. Yeah she’s not racist and she can season her food, but I’m not 100% white either. Especially when me and my brother have think about where we travel and make sure we don’t stop in a sundown town. (He was followed in one in broad daylight but I warned him before his road-trip)

I'm glad I'm seeing the mixed race experience get talked about. spent most of my childhood and adolescence feeling ugly because there wasn't many mixed people in my area or in media in general. And I didn't have the words to explain why I was feeling what I was feeling which made it even more frustrating

How About Being Blasian..Asian Dad...Raised by Mom...After decades of Life..Finding your Surname was a paper son name. Not your Bloodline Name. Then try connecting the Family tree..Then if you decide to travel to family homeland, which fork in the Road do you take!!!

I agree with your take on the importance of having these conversations. and it's equally important that those of us who are not listen to them.
