Here’s why: 🎓 Your investments grow tax-free. 💰 Qualified withdrawals for education are tax-free. 📚 Funds can be used for college, trade school, apprenticeship programs, and certain K-12 education expenses. 🔄 If one child doesn’t use the money, you can often change the beneficiary to another eligible family member. 🚀 And if the account meets the requirements, up to $35,000 can be transferred from a 529 Plan to the beneficiary’s Roth IRA over time (subject to annual Roth IRA contribution limits and other IRS rules). A custodial brokerage account is still a great option because it offers more flexibility, but the money legally belongs to your child when they reach the age of majority, and investment earnings may be taxable.
