For those that don’t understand. This band is essentially, a nerdy flex. Like a math nerd doing a complicated equation with just pen and paper. But like as a performance art piece. First the drum player. Angine de Poitrine use a mix of unusual time signatures across their songs—for example, “Sarniezz” is in 4/4 with a triplet-y 12/8 feel, “Mata Zylek” is 10/4, and “Sherpa” is 17/4. “Fabienk” is listed as either 7/4 (very strangely-grouped) or 28/4. Keeping perfect rhythm in all of these different, weird, and uncommon time signatures, often with added improv at shows, is extremely impressive in a music nerd way. Now the guitar/base player. Obviously its supposed to be impressive that they are playing both guitar and base on the same instrument, but thats not the really impressive part. If you look closely at the fret board, youll notice there are way more frets than a usual base/guitar. That is because they are playing a microtonal base/guitar. This means their base/guitar allows they to not only play the notes we all know, like the notes on a typical piano (ABCD etc./ Doe, Ray, Me, Fa, etc.), but they can also play the notes hidden in between those notes. You have to have an incredible ear to construct microtonal melodies (or grow up in some indigenous cultures in the middle east/far east/asia). Then on top of this, they are using a loop pedal to layer different microtonal melodies on top of eachother, live, in a bunch of wacky time signatures. Its all a flex of technical skill. Its not meant to be easy to listen or dance to, its meant to be confusing and hard to follow. Thats a big part of what makes it impressive. If you cant even follow it while listening, imagine how much skill it would take to perform it live over and over. Not everyone’s taste. But thats a brief explanation of what is going on with this band.

Play Angine de poitrine for someone. If they like it, chances are they're open-minded, curious, receptive to new things, fairly cultured, and left-leaning. If they hate it? Then they're probably a conservative and conventional person, allergic to novelty and fearful of what they don't understand.

You might think that they are limited to microtonal “math rock”, but live they had elements of punk and had songs that were funky!! Listen with Big Ears!!
