David Wheeler :
This totally broke my heart. I adopted my 1st cat in my 50s. Never thought I'd appreciate one. My wife, along with other drivers, watched a mini van throw out 5 kittens, 4 to 5 weeks old, and then just drive on. The other drivers picked up the siblings, but one had tumbled into a storm drain with water in it. My wife couldn't reach him. She called the Cape Coral Fire Department. The grate was jammed and took too much time, scared the kitten, who fell off a stick he was clinging onto and fell into a small stream of water, wasn't strong, but enough. In tears, my wife waited, hoping he'd come back. After aprox. 2 hours, there he was again, clinging onto that small stick. My wife called C.C.F.D. again, thinking they'd never come back, but they did, and in just minutes. They had a plan. Two firemen grabbed the grate, and a third snatched up the kitten before he was scared off again. It was on a Saturday, around 7 pm. Only an emergency vet was open. The plan, we'd pay, vet would find a home. A couple of hours later, I went back to pay the rest of the $800 bill. Before I left for good, I asked to see him. There he was, wide awake, terrified, huddled in the corner of a cold cage. I asked if I could maybe sit with him and try to calm him. I already brought a plush towel for him. I placed him on my chest, over my heart, so he could feel it, covered him with towel, out cold in a minute. I didn't want to disturb him, so I stayed in a chair until he woke. 7 hours later, one hell of a sore back, he woke up but refused to let go. His claws in my shirt and wouldn't let go! I totally fell in love with him, and no way was I going to chance a bad home. 12 years later, he still sleeps right next to me every night. We named him Jackpot, it just fit. His love for me is unbelievable. And I'm not ashamed to say I love him dearly!I'm sorry for the long story, but I wanted to share it. I also want to give a huge THANK YOU to the CAPE CORAL FIRE DEPT next to the Midpoint bridge. You guys were awesome and Jackpot thanks you TOO!! And my wife, thank you for caring so much and saving a precious life. I would have never felt the love Jackpot has, without your love for all animals.
