I’ve watched the movie and really liked it. Is it worth it to read the book? Like does it maybe explain the story better or has more details than the movie

I think the whole point is that Eva is an unstable mother, Kevin wasn’t “born evil”, he just did normal kid things that Eva interpreted as evil, that’s how I understood the movie at least! for example when Kevin destroyed her room he wasn’t old enough to comprehend between right and wrong and definitely not old enough to be conspiring against her

I feel like so many people don’t understand his character and they just want to put him in a categorized box. I think he naturally had a more antisocial temperament as a child, but it could have been managed or grown out of if he had some proper guidance rather than an abusive, neglectful mother who wanted to demonize him. She felt like her life ended when she got pregnant with him and those feelings made her project her own unhappiness onto Kevin as a way to feel free from her own shortcomings so that when he acted “malicious” she could say “see! It’s not my fault, there’s something inherently wrong with him!” To relieve herself of responsibility and remorse

I never viewed it as a "nature vs nurture" story at all, it's a commentary on Eva's failure, nothing before the m4ssacre can be trusted, it's all her interpretation

It’s so funny when people read this book and come down to this kind of conclusion. Kevin wasn’t deeply failed by everyone around him, Eva was neglectful yes and not a good mother at all, I will agree but for the most part Kevin received a very normal childhood and had a very loving father who provided what his mother couldn’t. To hate Eva, is to hate Kevin because a lot don’t even realize they both share a lot of the same traits. I have always said this and will again, Eva is a far more interesting character than Kevin is and she herself holds traits that Kevin does just expressed differently. I hate neither Kevin or Eva bc I understand both. If anything tbh I blame her husband, forgot his name but I blame him for forcing Eva into kids tbh when she really didn’t want any.

I wrote a long bit about this on tumblr, how this story is really not the “nature vs nurture” thing people like to say it is. Even admitted by Eva herself many times, it’s is explicitly known that Eva is a bad mother. Everything about how Kevin developed is due to how he was ‘nurtured’. And the book supports that but most people aren’t smart, nor caring, enough to see that or understand that concept of an unreliable narrator.

we cant deny our own innate nature though and while its true that they gravely excacerbated the situation its also true that he, like all of us, was born like that, wouldve never been properly functioning, and would never have a normal life
