Rudeus acknowledges that he could have lived a better life in his past life had he groomed himself and stayed fit as well as applied himself. He recognized that despite his privilege he was a garbage person in his past life. Rudeus also acknowledges that, even if his new life was wasn’t as fortunate, he would have tried his best. Sure he might have hated the world more but he would have loved life with the desperation of a drowning man. “I’m not here to tell you not to blame things on the way things are for you. I know I’ve been privileged. I try to remember there are people in terrible circumstances out there. I don’t mean to pretend to know what that’s like. All I’m saying is that, whether you get a good hand or a bad one, if you want to be satisfied with your life, you have to live life as hard and as fully as you can.” This is the message of mushoku. It’s a call to action for people to try to live life and change and this is why I love this story.
