Some little ones have a really big need to move. You often see it when they tighten up again and again and use their big muscles to get that satisfying feeling that comes when tiny receptors in muscles and joints stimulate the proprioceptive sense and help the body feel calm. Sometimes the need to tense the muscles is high because of the general desire for sensory input (motor restlessness). Other times it is, because your baby simply has been born with a slightly elavted baseline muscle tone (normal!). This is often the case for quickly developing and strong babies and they typically have a bigger need for movement. In many ways it is an advantage to have good high muscle tone, because it can make it easier to experience joy of movement and build physical strength. But when you are little and cannot yet meet your movement needs on your own, because you cannot crawl or walk yet, or because you simply do not get enough “miles in your legs” for your needs, it can be hard to use your body enough during the day. That is why many babies start tensing their muscles just like the baby in the video. Of course this is completely natural, but you can use it to “read” your baby, i.e. your baby is actually telling you that more movement and more sensory stimulation would feel wonderful. If you would like to learn how to stimulate the primary senses in a simple and effective way, you will find the exercises in my program “DeveloBaby Sleep”. Find it on my website or via link in bio. 💌 With love, Maria ♥️
