Night has fallen over Hacksaw Ridge.
The battlefield that had thundered with gunfire and explosions is now almost silent. Smoke hangs over the shattered ground. The American forces have withdrawn, leaving the ridge to the enemy.
But Desmond Doss is still there.
Alone, exhausted, terrified, and surrounded by darkness, he stands among the dead and wounded and looks toward heaven. He had believed God called him here, but now, in the horror surrounding him, he cannot understand why.
Then he begins to pray.
DD: Lord… what is it You want of me? I don’t understand. I can’t hear You.
For a moment, there is only silence.
Then, somewhere out in the darkness, a wounded soldier cries for help.
And suddenly, Desmond understands.
God: Listen.
[From somewhere in the darkness comes the cry of a wounded man.]
Soldier: Medic!
God: You asked Me what I wanted of you.
God: “Whom shall I send?”
DD: Here am I.
God: Then go.
DD: But I’m only one man.
God: I have never asked you to be enough by yourself. I asked you to be faithful.
[Another wounded soldier cries out in the darkness.]
God: Whatever you do for the least of these, you do for Me.
DD: Even here? Even in all of this?
God: Especially here.
DD: I don’t have a weapon.
God: Then carry mercy.
DD: I can’t stop this war.
God: Then save the man in front of you.
DD: I can’t save them all.
God: I did not ask you for all of them at once.
DD: Then give me one.
[Desmond crawls back into the darkness, finds a wounded soldier, drags him to the edge of the escarpment, and lowers him to safety.]
DD: Lord, please help me get one more.
God: Go.
[He returns.]
DD: One more, Lord.
[Another man is lowered to safety.]
DD: Please… just one more.
God: Greater love has no man than this: that he lay down his life for his friends.
DD: Then keep me standing until there’s no one left I can reach.
God: I am with you.
DD: One more, Lord.
[Back into the darkness.]
DD: One more.
[Again.]
DD: One more.
"Lord, please help me get one more."
