You can also animation cancel his reload by holding up his shield about halfway through the animation (you'll see the ammo count reset before his hands fully come together, that's when you press your shield) similar to the melee primary weave, practice it a bit and it'll become muscle memory.

Dont forget u can cancel ur reloads just use shield when ur relaod circle is betwen 2/4 and 3/4

another thing regarding portals, they dont always have to face away from the enemy team. just never face them directly towards the team. also always try to make sure you angle it in a way that allows your dps and supports to immediately get to a safe spot to avoid immediate damage
