Let’s talk about the “Dare Stones”. In 1587, 116 English settlers arrived at Roanoke Island to establish the “Cittie of Raleigh.” Among them: Governor John White, his daughter Eleanor Dare, and her husband Ananias. On August 18th, Eleanor gave birth to Virginia Dare who was the first English child born in the Americas. Nine days later, John White left for England to get supplies. When he returned three years later, the colony was deserted. The only clue: the word “CROATOAN” carved into a post. Then in 1937, so exactly 350 years after Virginia Dare’s birth, a California tourist named Louis Hammond showed up at Emory University with a 21 lbs stone. The inscription was signed “EWD,” and described the deaths of Virginia and Ananias Dare “at the hands of savages” and claimed the settlers fled inland where disease and violence killed all but seven survivors. At the time this was a thrilling find, but in retrospect the timing was suspicious. That same summer, President Roosevelt visited Roanoke Island for Virginia Dare’s 350th birthday celebration. A major play about the Lost Colony had also just opened. And then suddenly, this stone appears.. Within four years, 47 more stones surfaced, which eventually were all confirmed as fakes. But the first stone’s authenticity remains inconclusive. The issue is the Dare Stone narrative doesn’t match the evidence we have. The Croatoan people were allies. Their leader, Manteo, traveled to England twice and was made a lord by Queen Elizabeth I. If the colonists “fled” to Croatoan, they were likely seeking their help, not fleeing attackers. Recent archaeology at “Site X,” 50 miles inland points to the colonists likely splitting up into groups with some integrating with the indigenous peoples. No massacre here. Actually, if there was any massacre it was the other way around. Sir Walter Raleigh, who was originally given the charter to establish the first colony, was violent against the Native peoples. John White himself led a disastrous raid that killed friendly Natives by mistake. So why did the Dare Stone story catch fire in 1937 America? Because it fit a comfortable narrative. Innocent English settlers attacked by violent “savages” and die like martyrs in this new world. It’s colonial mythology dressed up as archaeology. The same mythology that justified centuries of violence against Indigenous peoples. In 2016, Brenau University geologist Ed Schrader analyzed the first stone and discovered its interior was bright white vein quartz, which is perfect for creating high-contrast inscriptions. He stated the geological weathering process would be hard to fake. Hence why the Dare Stone remains “inconclusive”. But maybe Eleanor Dare simply carved “CROATOAN” into that post, not as a warning, but just a message to her father about where they went. Maybe this wasn’t so much of a mystery after all.
