@jahelis: Replying to @Aluoch even white artist who’s target audience is white audiences still steal from black American culture to be successful. Think post Malone, Miley Cyrus, MGK. Even the guy whose cover to Fast Car (a song by black woman) and then went number one. #tyla #lizzo #beyoncé #musicopinions
Zara Larsson is very talented. Apart from her previous hit from 10 years ago, what made her trend again were her features with two Black women. It's true that she outdid them in both features, but I noticed that Zara was the one who benefited the most from these collaborations, more than the two Black women. Why? Because she has massive support from white audiences after getting the Black audience's approval. The same didn't happen for those two Black women. White people mostly support white people.

I said that her management was at a huge fault because they don’t understand the demographic they’re trying to market to, on Twitter. A Tyla fan tried to argue me down about it, then the AI mv came out the next day😭

The Beyoncé example is so real and even Rihanna (who they love to compare Tyla to) had black women & gay men with her 2 first albums with Caribbean music (Reggae/Dancehall) and RnB before going Pop with Good Girl Gone Bad. This is just pattern recognition. Every successful non white artist catered to minorities before getting more white ppl in their audience.

imho this is why kpop still hasn’t fully pushed into the American mainstream. (Despite what kpop stans will tell you) It’s not that kpop is uniquely bad or simply too foreign for US tastes. Korean management companies obviously want US appeal b/c it’s a huge market; they’re pushing more English or fully eng with their songs, they’re heavily copying US music trends, etc. But! they fail to realize in there’s little to no interest by the tastemakers of blk America for Korean ppl copying yt ppl music or blk ppl music. And as such, yt ppl will occasionally give them a breakout hit as a novelty (Touch by Illit got some mainstream radio play — I remember hearing it IRL), or actively treat it as a joke (Katseye performing Gnarly at that awards show was basically a humiliation ritual). But they won’t reach global superstardom in the way they want to be perceived. Not to mention extremist k-pop stans keep them delusional abt it — most recently see CORTIS’s insane fanbase.

Exactly, i love the way you put it. Everyone always loves to disregard the black dollar and stamp of approval but it is very clear it is very important especially in the US whether you like it or not. And now black people have started to figure out extent of their relevancy

Destiny’s Child is still the best selling girl’s group in the world lol. Beyonce had a white audience when she DEBUTED as a solo act. Beyonce didn’t have to cross over bc she’s a Black American. Black American culture is American culture. Tyla is an Indian woman by way of South Africa. Her entire presence in the industry is rooted in anti-Blackness. The industry heads do not want a Black woman to be the face of Black African created music. It’s perverse really.

I like how none of this sounds like hate or the xenophobic comments some Americans have been making about Tyla, its actually educational as someonenot from America. I'm so interested to know how you think she could fix this PR wise because it seems like Black America has already made its decision and won't listen to anything regarding her?

youre not wrong, white woman here and if I dont like something at first but black women especially that I follow like it, I'll go back and be like hey maybe I'll give this another listen. And especially when calling out the Target music of the world, like I know for a fact I have a much bigger tolerance for some fairly mediocre music unless its pointed out or I hear it way too many times

I’m not so sure that they didn’t know the rule. I think they thought she was an exception to it. That if they threw enough money behind the campaign, it would work. I think the music execs got too cocky and thought that they could skip the organic growth, skip paying dues, and tell us what to buy and we’d follow. Bc after Water they rushed her to market. This isn’t an awful strategy, but the missteps made all the exposure backfire: that magazine spread where she’s surrounded by only dark skinned black men, the breakfast club situation, the holding her own award thing, even the Met situation and now her fans are fighting rihanna fans…which is the dumbest move ever. We heard about her all right—for all the wrong reasons. It’s not even the good kind of bad press, it’s just bad.

THIS IS THE TAKE. I’m so glad we are talking about this. The Black audience and Black dollar is genuinely quite crucial for the success of the arts in America. We are THE tastemakers no matter what non-Black people want to believe. There’s too many examples to ignore over decades how true this is!

It was very clear she was being marketed to a white audience or just a general “American” audience. Her team clearly did not do their due diligence in understanding where she should be placed.

black dollar is no where close to being the biggest but it's unambiguously the heaviest in culture. why a non-white artist in particular would think they don't need it is just stupid at best, hateful at worst.

Which was always delusional because….shes not white. White people as a whole not listening to obviously ethnic music that’s not even the type of ethnic music they hear out regularly. It was never going to happen.

I don't think so because she doesn't make American pop music. Why would she look for a white audience if her music isn't their sound? It just seems like American audiences want her to assimilate more and she's not doing that 🤷🤷
