Liberalism and conservatism is an ideology, not only that most people equate liberals with democrats, leftist and progressives represent about 6% and rising of the democratic party. Republicans tend to lump moderate dems and progressives together under the title of liberal because liberal still has a negative connotation within the political sphere.

The number of people I've heard say "I'm pro-life cuz I'd never get an abrtion but I'd never want someone to be forced to have a baby". Like, no. That's the whole point of pro-choice

This makes sense. I also feel like a lot of people have never once interrogated their own politics beyond which "team" they are on. As soon as you talk through policies, they might be open to shifting their political identity. I've seen this with my own family. They are smart people, just not politically educated until I started pushing back.
