I think Trump understands that he is playing with the possibility of a forever war, one that could reshape the world far beyond the battlefield. If America could decisively win this war on its own terms, it probably would have by now. The deeper danger is that the conflict may ultimately weaken America’s position as the global hegemon. The “America” brand has already lost much of its appeal in many parts of the world, while China appears increasingly capable of challenging the existing order without necessarily rushing to replace it. It reminds me of the old saying: don’t interrupt your enemy while they are making mistakes. Perhaps China’s restraint is not weakness. Perhaps it understands that sometimes the smartest strategic move is to let your rival exhaust themselves.
