I was a kid in the 70s and our next-door neighbors had tattoos from the camps. They were Polish. Julian and Josephine. They met in the camps. They gave us Pashanky eggs from Poland and brought food over when my mother was sick. It’s weird that I knew holocaust survivors because I’m 64. I’m not super old.

While doing some family research, I found the birth record of a baby who was born on May 1, 1944. He was sent to Auschwitz just eight days after he was born.

One of my great aunt ( aged 89, born in Munich ) still believes sometimes that her house is getting bombed, she hides in her attic. We have to « save her » and act as soldiers for her to finally leave the attic…

yeah it’s crazy. a lot of the hippie era jewish musicians probably would not have ever grown up if they were born across the pond rather than safe in america. like simon & garfunkel, bob dylan. the Holocaust seems like a long time ago as someone born in the 90s. But for these guys it was contemporary. I just wonder what that was and is like.

I thought the holocaust was SOOOO long ago until the 6th grade where my school brought in a real survivor that told us about how her and her family took months to escape Germany. Very eye opening experience

My great grandmother escaped and managed to get her sister out; she met her husband in ny after he survived dachau. She lived to be 101, her sister is still alive.

I'm 24yo, and in Poland we know a lot of WW2 local stories. About gas and fire chambers. About running from soviet army. about hiding jew kid in attic (if germans find out that u hide jew, u both was killed). Example My great-grand father have double death sentence ( he survive), one death sentence was from Nazi and another was from Soviets.

My grandpa escaped Serbia during the war, he lied to officers by saying he was 16, while he actually was 17. Turned out they shoot his whole class, and if he had said that he was 17, me, my mom, aunts, cousins and brother wouldn’t exist. War is really cruel.
