But realistically, when you rent, you’re still helping to pay a mortgage—it’s just someone else’s. The difference is that when you’re paying your own mortgage, you’re building equity in a property you own. When you’re renting, you generally don’t build equity in that property. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but personally, I believe that if you can comfortably afford it and it fits your circumstances, buying with a mortgage can be a smarter long-term financial decision than renting.
