Its history predates Islam, with roots stretching back to the time of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Prophet Ismail (Ishmael). According to Islamic tradition, Ibrahim built the Kaaba, the cubic structure at the heart of the city, as a house of worship.
