I think it’s mostly just people putting a name to it. For example, someone might say a person looks like they haven’t slept in days or that they look like a corpse, when the actual reason is recessed infraorbitals. Most people obviously aren’t going to know the exact reason someone looks the way they do, but looksmaxxers tend to recognize and point out the specific facial features that cause those appearances.
