@starrykaisen: He wouldn’t be even a little surprised at how the future played out unfortunately 😬 #raybradbury

the most unrealistic part of the story is the kids were outside playing with a ball when the ai centers cooked them.

Surprised no one has mentioned the wild coincidence of “Tick-tock” being in the first sentence.

I am haunted by “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury. It’s about a girl and rain on Venus in a colony. Read it especially if you were teased or othered. it stays with me. You can find a movie of it from the lates 70s on yt.

To quote my partner "There’s something poignant about living in the distant future and there *not* being a nuclear apocalypse happening. Like, bad as things are, they could be worse. And it wasn’t so long ago that people assumed it would be worse by this point. We are flawed little animals, and we are slow to change, but we do make things better eventually."

If anyone’s interested in the poem within the story. It was first published in 1918 during WWI

This short story is a lot less about how our smart homes will outlive us and more about how we’re b*mbing each other. It’s about how as humans we behave as a species and though it may not look exactly the same (no one can predict exactly what the future will look like) his story came true. We are all indifferent to the atrocities that surround us as we continue to live our everyday lives. 🇵🇸

I found a link to that poem on my calendar this morning, and I have no recollection of putting it there. Thank you for reminding me of the date and what it means.

Whhaaaaaaa... I remember being in 3rd grade (in the 80s) listening to this record. My God. I am in the future. It never occurred to me it was a real date. Now we do have cars which drive themselves, rockets which land vertically, and AI. What a crazy thing.

I love ray Bradbury. especially some of his weird early stuff like the reaper or the little assassin. but Something Wicked this Way Comes is the work that stuck with me.

it's kind of nice at the end... I know it's kind of weird to empathize with a house but without humans it couldn't save itself from fire. And without the house, humans couldn't save themselves from the fire.

You know the burnt, ashy outlines/silhouettes of kids throwing a ball? IRL I saw a black-spray-paint-stencil-collage on a fence of kids playing. This was maybe 2 weeks ago, I drove past and was like man, do I have a story for you 😬

I took a science fiction class as a junior in high school and we read The Martian Chronicles. This story has lived rent free in the back of my mind ever since.

I read that story in the 7th grade and couldn’t remember who the author was! Thank you for unearthing that memory. Ironically I had the same thing happen with The Martian Chronicles, just forgot that was also him.
