A Hawaii police officer who arrested a hiker near the Pali Puka Trail on O'ahu last year testified in the man's attempted murder trial this week in Honolulu. Chauncey Nicola has been an officer with the Honolulu Police Department for nine years. He went to the trail on March 24, 2025, after a hiker told 911 she and her friend helped a woman after they heard her screaming and saw a man on top of her, bashing her face with a rock. Nicola was in an unmarked police van with other officers when he spotted a man who matched the description of the assailant emerge from a forested area onto the roadway. The man was later identified as Gerhardt Konig, who moved to Maui from Pittsburgh in 2023 with his wife, Arielle, and traveled to O'ahu to celebrate her birthday. The couple was in counseling after Gerhardt discovered flirtatious texts between Arielle and a co-worker. Gerhardt's lawyer says he acted in self defense when he hit Arielle in the fact with a lava rock, after she attacked him on the steep, cliffside trail. Then he turns and he runs away from my vehicle to this brushy, like the grassy area, because we're still in the roadway," Nicola testified. Nicola got out of the van and chased the man. Other officers were with him, but "I didn't see when they came out or anything. I was just focused on running ahead of me." "So as I got closer, I reached out and I grabbed his right arm," Nicola testified. "I'm still yelling, 'Police! Stop! Police! Stop!' And I was able to grab onto his right arm." "After you grab the defendant's arm, what did the defendant do?" Garner asked. "He tries to pull — like, break my grip. So he tries to pull on and continue running away from me, to get away from me," Nicola said. He said they both lost their balance. "We both fell down, and I fall on top of him," Nicola testified. "Who falls on top of who?" Garner asked. "I fell on top of him," Nicola answered. Nicola said Konig reached for his black bag so "I'm trying to use my physical strength to pull the bag away from him, which I was able to, and I'm able to pull it out off of him and get it away from him." Nicola got the bag, but he said Konig continued "to push and fight, and he's trying to, like, grab all over." "So I don't know what he's going for. He's looking for his waist. He's going for his pants. So I don't know if he has a weapon or not. So I try to, I continue to try to gain control of him. So I give him some distractionary strikes to his large muscle group area," Nicola said. Jurors saw photos of Konig after police arrested him. Testimony in Konig's trial continues Tuesday (March 31) in Judge Paul B.K. Wong's courtroom in Honolulu.
