Ukrainian forces liberated major cities such as Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Mariupol, and Severodonetsk, restoring government control over large parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. By the summer of 2014, Ukraine had regained much of the territory initially seized by Russian-backed armed groups and was close to surrounding several of their strongholds.
