"Rescue the Perishing" was written by the American hymn writer Fanny J. Crosby (1820–1915), with music composed by William H. Doane. The hymn first appeared in 1869 and has since become one of the most enduring gospel hymns on Christian compassion and evangelism. The inspiration came after Fanny Crosby visited the Bowery Mission in New York City, where she spoke to people struggling with poverty, addiction, and hopelessness. During the meeting, she felt a strong burden to reach out to a young man who had wandered far from God. She pleaded with him to return to Christ. Deeply moved, the young man came forward and embraced her, saying that she had spoken directly to his heart. That encounter left a lasting impression on Crosby. Reflecting on the urgency of reaching those who were spiritually lost and suffering, she wrote the words: "Rescue the perishing, care for the dying, Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave." William H. Doane later composed the stirring melody that gave the hymn its powerful and memorable character. More than 150 years later, "Rescue the Perishing" continues to challenge Christians to show Christ's love through compassion, service, and the proclamation of the gospel. It remains a favourite in churches, mission outreaches, revival meetings, and Christian choirs around the world. #TheStoryBehind #RescueThePerishing #FannyJCrosby #WilliamHDoane #ChristianHymns
