@fundamentalist.art: Only studying surface planes is wrong. Planes are associated with not just the surface of the subject matter, but also the underlying form and structure. Using the head as an example. It is the most common subject matter for artists to study. But too often do we just copy the outline and features as flat shapes and call it done. Some artists say they know planes, but they just put some shapes on top of refs and that is the end. It is only when we consider the skull and muscles under the skin. The components that together created the surface plane. That we are truely studying our subject matter.
