Up until the dinner scene, clark had blamed everyone but himself for his problems. The backrooms feeds off your subconscious which is why captain clark (being a clone of him) attacked everyone but him. After mary made him realize he was the problem, captain clark began to see him a threat as well.

In the movie I feel like Clark never wanted to be saved he just wanted to be right, once he found peace with that part of himself, Captain Clark is some sort of negative entity, that feed off the hurt of Clark, so CC kills him to make him hurt. But I could be wrong
