Youths of Otun Ekiti on Monday staged a protest against what they described as outrageous electricity bills issued by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC. The protesters been mobilized in large numbers, marched to the King’s Palace, the Local Government Chairman’s office, and the Divisional Police Office in Otun Ekiti to register their grievances over the recent billing. According to the youths, residents have been receiving estimated bills starting from ₦27,500 and above. They also alleged that after paying money into prepaid meters, only a small amount reflects as credit. The protesters were seen demanding an immediate reduction in the bills and that the community be moved from Band A to Band C tariff band. Following the protest, a meeting was held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 in Ado-Ekiti with the Honourable Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities. In attendance were the SSA to the Governor on Electricity Matters, DG of Ekiti State Electricity Board, GM of Electricity Regulatory Bureau, BEDC Regional Head, Business Manager, Commercial Head and two others, the Obaleo of Erinmope and his chiefs, the Alaaye of Aaye and his people, President of Egbe Omo Otun with two EXCO members, High Chief Obadofin, and Mr. L.K. Abolarin. Mr. Abolarin was nominated to speak for Otun, followed by representatives from Erinmope and Aaye. After extensive deliberations, it was agreed that the Commissioner will visit Otun next Wednesday for a public engagement to explain agreements with BEDC and possible solutions. It was also agreed that light should be restored to the community without further delay, and that BEDC officials should commence payment collection without any disturbance. Customers with estimated bills of ₦27,030 are to be offered a payment plan of between ₦10,000 and ₦15,000. Residents were also urged to suspend further protests pending the final resolution of the issue. A final decision on reversing the Band A tariff was not reached at the close of the meeting. Community leaders said they are hopeful that the Commissioner’s visit next week will bring lasting relief to residents. #ekiti #ekititrends
