It's pretty much just a tourist visa here, you can't even get a bank account so if you have the money and aren't 50 or older, just get the LTR, long-term resident visa if you have the money and you get 10yrs with so many more options, can open Thai accounts and have a tax agreement to.

You run the risk of getting METV which is only 6 months. So dont bank on a year. Also, easy to do it without agents...
