@8dayssg: Remember when Singapore flags seemed to fill almost every HDB block in the lead-up to National Day? A recent social media post showing an HDB estate with almost no Singapore flags on display got people wondering if hanging the national flag has become a fading tradition. Curious, we decided to check a few HDB blocks ourselves. In some of the estate we visited, we could count the number of Singapore flags hung per block on one hand. Of course, displaying the Singapore flag has always been voluntary, and our observations aren’t representative of every neighbourhood in Singapore. But it does raise an interesting question: are fewer Singaporeans choosing to put up the flag today, or does it simply feel that way? With National Day approaching and Singapore celebrating SG60, we explore why the simple act of hanging the national flag still sparks conversation. What does your HDB block look like this year? Are your neighbours flying the Singapore flag, or has this National Day tradition quietly changed over time? #8dayssg #8dayssgtrending #NationalDay2026 #NDP #SingaporeFlag

If every flag we hang can receive $100 then u can have a satisfying result. Our main concern is the bread n butter issue n how to put foods on the table.

The frustrations are real. The cost of living is high, and many Singaporeans are facing genuine challenges. Those concerns deserve to be heard, not brushed aside. But I don’t think our pride in being Singaporean should depend solely on whether times are good or bad. Being Singaporean is more than the issues we face today. It is the safety we often take for granted, the stability that many around the world wish they had, the opportunities available to us, the diversity we live with every day, and the passport that is respected almost everywhere. No country is without problems, and loving your country doesn’t mean pretending those problems don’t exist. It means caring enough to want it to be better while still appreciating what it has already given us. Before asking “Hang the flag for what?”, perhaps ask instead, “Have I forgotten what this country has given me that millions of others still hope for?” We can demand better, hold our leaders accountable, and speak up about what needs fixing but we don’t have to lose our pride in being Singaporean to do that. Majulah Singapura.
