@kafanalabs: Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) devices are microscopic implants designed to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) with minimal tissue disruption, faster recovery, and a high safety profile compared to conventional glaucoma surgery. These devices are primarily indicated for mild to moderate primary open-angle glaucoma and are frequently implanted during cataract surgery. MIGS devices are categorized by their anatomical target: Schlemm’s Canal Devices (shown in the animation): These bypass the trabecular meshwork to enhance natural drainage. Examples include the iStent (the smallest implantable device in the human body, made of titanium), iStent inject, and the Hydrus Microstent (a scaffold that spans ~90° of Schlemm’s canal). Subconjunctival Devices: These create a new drainage pathway into the sub-Tenon’s space to form a bleb. The XEN Gel Stent is a flexible, hydrophilic tube implanted ab interno or ab externo, while the PreserFlo Microshunt is a SIBS material device implanted ab externo that shows high efficacy in reducing IOP. Supraciliary/Suprachoroidal Devices: These target the space between the sclera and choroid. The MINIject is a commercially available implant targeting the supraciliary space, utilizing a porous structure to reduce fibrosis. The CyPass Micro-Stent previously targeted the suprachoroidal space but was withdrawn from the market due to endothelial cell loss. While MIGS offers significant benefits such as reduced reliance on eye drops and lower risk of severe complications, the IOP reduction is generally more modest than with conventional trabeculectomy. Consequently, these devices are less suitable for patients with advanced glaucoma or those requiring profound pressure lowering. #glaucoma #eye #migs #eyecare #eyesurgery
