Part 2…and I’ll just share the same caption here as in Part 1: I never expected the reaction I received from this voice teacher. I assumed they’d have simply agreed, and I would have left it at that. Afterall, the post was making a quick point. And I totally get that. I agreed with it! But she took it a step further by rejecting my comment altogether. Basically, displaying to everyone in her comments that her students’ financial well-being is of no concern (which I have thoughts on why) and the primary (only) focus is getting to Broadway with that BFA. This narrative has to change. (Because she’s not the only one.) We are all so afraid to talk (and hear) about money. I’m a product of a home and school system, along with countless other voice teachers/coaches, who never talked about money. Now, I don’t expect a voice teacher to talk to me about money. But I would expect them to have my best interests at heart and at minimum agree that Music Theater is a wonderful, but difficult career - and it is a career that does not offer financial stability. When you stand publicly telling people to go and attain a degree which could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, I think it needs to be something you at least acknowledge. Right? Dismissing yourself from the subject is not helpful. What if I asked you in your studio? What would you say? I believe dismissing does more harm that good. Because I didn’t have the option of talking to a professional, or even my parents, about school costs. Hell, my high school college advisor didn’t even know what a BFA was (true story). Some of these kids are on their own, chasing a dream. They need you to spike the Kool-Aid a bit, not just serve your student portfolio of credits. We need people to go into creative fields like music theater, but we have an obligation to set them up for success as best we can. There’s a way to guide people…But maybe I’m the only one who feels this way (though I doubt it).
