A HOSPITAL IN BARCELONA TAKES ICU PATIENTS TO THE SEA — WITHOUT EVEN TAKING THEM OUT OF THEIR BEDS ❤️🌊 For some critically ill patients in Barcelona, leaving intensive care doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going home. Sometimes, it means doctors and nurses are taking them somewhere many ICU patients rarely get to experience: outside. At Hospital del Mar, located just steps from Barcelona’s Mediterranean waterfront, selected ICU patients can be taken on carefully supervised outings to see the sea. The initiative is part of the hospital’s effort to make intensive care feel more human. Patients may be wheeled from the ICU in their hospital beds, surrounded by doctors, nurses and the medical equipment needed to keep them safe. Once outside, the scenery changes completely. Instead of ceilings, monitors and hospital walls, there is sunlight, fresh air, the sound of the city and the Mediterranean Sea. One particularly moving example came in 2020, when ICU patient Isidre Correa was taken to the waterfront after spending nearly two months in intensive care. Photographs of the outing traveled around the world. The hospital says these trips are carried out under medical supervision and with strict safety protocols. The outings are part of a much broader approach to humanizing intensive care. Hospital del Mar has also incorporated initiatives including music therapy, virtual reality, family involvement and other non-drug interventions aimed at improving patients’ experience and emotional well-being. Perhaps the most beautiful part is what these few minutes represent. For a short while, someone whose world has become a hospital bed, machines and medical procedures gets to look at the horizon again. To feel the breeze. To see the sunlight. To remember that beyond the walls of intensive care, life is still happening. ❤️ The outings shouldn’t be portrayed as a replacement for medical treatment or as proof that seeing the sea itself speeds physical recovery. Rather, they are part of an effort to care for the person behind the patient—and make an extraordinarily difficult experience a little more human. CTA: If you were facing a long hospital stay, how much would a few minutes outside in the sunshine and fresh air mean to you? ❤️🌊 Follow creamyposh for more inspiring stories.
