Different field but same concept - When I did graphic design work, standing next to the pressmen and in bindery taught me how to better design pieces to be produced more efficiently. Simple things like adding production notes in the margins that will be cut off or learning the real tolerances of the equipment made it easier for everyone.

I think new engineers should be made to spend some time on the floor doing inspections on parts. Forces them to have interaction with the shop.

My dad was an auto worker and hated engineers precisely because of how rarely they actually talked to the folks on the floor. There was only 1 engineer who he ever saw talk to the assembly workers, that was the only engineer he respected. I made sure to grow into the kind of engineer my dad would like. it makes such a huge difference understanding how your things are made!

You also have to follow up. If you never make any changes, even just 1 out of 10 times, the floor ppl will stop wasting their time talking to you.
