In the 1890s the Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan was where Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Amelia Earhart went to get healthy. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg ran the show, his brother Will ran the books, and together they invented the corn flake in the San’s experimental kitchen. Then Will wanted to add sugar and sell it to the world. John called it a betrayal of medicine. Will walked out in 1906, put his signature on every box, and the brothers spent a decade suing each other over their own name. They barely spoke again. In 1943 a dying John finally wrote an apology, and his secretary never sent it. Will was blind by the time his brother’s words were read to him, years too late. Every cereal aisle on earth is a monument to the feud.
