@hiddenjapanguide0: Kyoto machiya — the wooden townhouses everyone stops to photograph. Most people never go inside one. Here's what you're actually looking at: The wooden lattice over the windows is koshi — you can see out, people can't easily see in. The low bench underneath is a battari shogi, where shopkeepers used to display goods. The curved bamboo fence is inuyarai, protecting the wall from street splash. And the small ceramic figure on the roof is Shoki — a guardian who keeps bad luck out. Once you know these, you'll spot them all over Kyoto. This inn is built in that style, with 14 tatami rooms that each have their own bathroom. It went up in 2016, so it looks traditional but the plumbing works. Breakfast is free and comes from neighbourhood shops, and the sento across the street is free for guests. Save this before Kyoto 👇 #kyoto #japantravel #machiya #japantrip #kyotohotel
