Extreme joint hypermobility, also known as hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS), is a connective tissue disorder characterized by unusually flexible joints and stretchy skin. Joint hypermobility refers to joints that move beyond the normal range of motion. In individuals with extreme joint hypermobility, this flexibility is often present throughout the body and can be more pronounced than in typical cases of joint hypermobility. Individuals with extreme joint hypermobility often have joints that can bend or move beyond the normal range. This can include hyperextension of the knees, elbows, fingers, and other joints. Such flexibility may lead to joint instability and an increased risk of dislocations or subluxations (partial dislocations). Due to the increased flexibility and laxity of their joints, individuals with extreme joint hypermobility are at a higher risk of joint injuries, such as sprains, strains, dislocations, and ligament tears.
