To be clear, her death had literally nothing to do with the gene editing. It was the vector that she reacted to. If we're not clear about this we'll stir up lay people who don't know the difference to be against gene editing treatments

Unfortunately, I also believe the parents are to blame, or at least Chinese societal norms there is absolutely no reason why a child with mild intellectual disabilities should need genetic modifications

I had caught wind of this story and am completely horrified to learn that the disorder was mild and not degenerative. A lot of serious societal questions need to be asked in China about why a child was ever offered an untested gene editing treatment for what amounts a to mild learning difficulty.

This feels like there is a MAJOR lack of oversight too. Why are scientists allowed to take $ from parents like this, without strong peer review? Why weren’t there other scientists, capable of understanding the complexities of this research not involved throughout the process? Where is this person working out of and why are they not keeping a closer eye on things to ensure the integrity of reporting?

This is why all research studies need third party reviews that do not financially benefit from the research and any study discovered to have left out significant organ damage need to be charged and prosecuted for fraud and in this case medical malpractice. That doctor should be fired and have his license revoked

The problem is more pernicious than you tell, honestly. Gene editing needs to be treated exactly the same way we treat human cloning. It’s fine for adults and children well into their developmental cycle, but anything younger than the average onset of puberty needs to be banned. We cannot allow the genesis of designer babies or the modification of children so young as to make no difference. There are a billion reasons why allowing such a thing is an existential threat to our civilization. If you don’t believe me, look at the rampant damage AI is already doing in its current essentially unregulated state.

The parents were manipulated and made to believe their daughter would have a life of struggle, parents should seek out advice from ADULTS who have disorders that their children have. The adults that live everyday and function everyday can give better advice and input than parents could (unless the kid is a baby, which like... No one can remember being a baby so the parents gotta take charge on that one)

I want to encourage the Western audience that are commenting on this post to jump off the "ableism" horse and take China's work culture and socioeconomic pressures into their perspective. Was what they did ableist? Yes. But you can't have expected them to just know better, when what they wanted for their child was to not have to struggle in society. Accessibility is already bad in the West, but there are at least some laws in place to try and resolve that. Then you have to look at China, where that is just simply not the case. What happened to Mei is a tragedy, but pinpointing it to one specific talking point is not going to bring this conversation along any further.
