@mirror.image.para: Perched on a hill in Bartonville, Illinois, Peoria State Hospital opened in 1902 with a mission unlike most psychiatric hospitals of its era. Under the leadership of Dr. George Zeller, the hospital emphasized kindness and dignity, rejecting many of the harsh treatments common at the time. Patients worked on the grounds, enjoyed recreational activities, and were treated as people rather than prisoners. At its peak, the hospital housed nearly 2,800 patients across a sprawling campus of 63 buildings before closing its doors in 1973. One of the hospital's most recognizable landmarks was its massive limestone Administration Building, which stood as the centerpiece of the campus for decades. After years of deterioration, the historic structure was demolished in 2017, leaving behind only a handful of the original buildings to preserve the hospital's legacy. Despite its progressive beginnings, the hospital became the center of one of Illinois' most enduring ghost stories. The most famous spirit is Manuel "Old Book" Bookbinder, a beloved patient who helped bury fellow patients in the hospital cemetery. Legend says that after his death, mourners—including Dr. Zeller himself—reported seeing Old Book standing beneath the cemetery's elm tree while his body was still lying in the casket. Since then, visitors have claimed to experience shadow figures, disembodied voices, phantom footsteps, cold spots, and unexplained activity throughout the remaining buildings and cemetery. The hospital has even been featured on Ghost Hunters, adding to its paranormal reputation. Whether you believe the stories or not, Peoria State Hospital remains a fascinating reminder that some of the most haunted places are also places of compassion, hope, and forgotten history. I've explored the bowen building back in the late 90s early 2000s went from the basement to the attic, there's a maze of steam tunnels underneath the basement I also explored, it's so dark down there you turn your flashlight off you can't see your hand in front of your face, most of the tunnels only went so far before being sealed off but I was in one that kept going and going never did find the end of it, I never seen anything in there but I heard things that will give you goosebumps people talking/whispering, doors slamming shut, footsteps, down in the steam tunnels it would sound like someone rolling a bowling ball above my head, it's weird how you gain access in the bowen there's a metal grate you lift up to get down in there it's tight at first it's all brick in the beginning then will eventually open up more where you can stand up I followed the steam pipes to navigate my way around.

There’s alien faces carved into a cliffside in the woods there with a date from sometime in the 1920’s. It’s freaky to see
