@dewittweichers: Home accessibility is something we’ve never had to worry about - until Beau had his fall, subsequent surgery, and has to be in a wheelchair for several weeks. He is 18, intellectually disabled, and is on state insurance. His insurance wouldn’t pay for a rental of a ramp to access the home. They would cover a wheelchair, but not a way for him to get into our home. We’ve had a small non-profit for years called Beau’s Beautiful Blessings where we have helped several families with children like Beau over the last 15-16 years - and built a fully inclusive playground for our community. I’ve spent so many hours fundraising for our own non-profit over the years and it’s all volunteer. I spoke with the board and asked for help with the expense of the ramp rental. It’s not cheap to have, even for just a month or two. Especially when our house requires such an elaborate ramp set up to have the right slope to safely go up and down. The board approved our request ❤️ and we were able to find a local company that was willing to come out and get us set up in short notice and they did amazing. 319 Ramps & Accessibilty did amazing and now we have the freedom to safely get into and out of our home. With my own hip surgery this summer, I’m not able to lift and help Beau like I typically could. Now I can get him out of the house on my own without having to wait for help from my husband.
